Some 10,000 vulnerable families to receive food, household items and pandemic care kits
Singapore, 20 January 2022 – The ninth annual SP Power Packs charity drive sees a five-fold increase in the number of families receiving bags of daily essential items. SP Group is committing over S$1.1 million to the Power Packs for 10,000 families, many of whom are seniors from low-income households. Up from an average of 2,000 a year, the packs are prepared and distributed by SP’s staff volunteers, known as SP Heart Workers. In a record high contribution this year, distribution of the packs will be extended beyond the festive season, throughout the year.
The initial batch of over 2,800 Power Packs is being delivered today. The charity drive was initiated through staff donations towards the items. This year, SP has boosted its contribution so that each Power Pack contains more than S$100 worth of food as well as items to guard against the pandemic, such as Antigen Rapid Test (ART) kits, sanitiser, hand wash, wet wipes, and vitamins.
Group Chief Executive Officer of SP Group, Stanley Huang said, "Our annual SP Power Packs charity drive is timely for the festive season. Going further, we are stepping up our contributions through sustained outreach throughout the year, to ensure that the needs of vulnerable families continue to be met. SP Group’s contribution of over S$1.1 million, together with the volunteer efforts of our staff, will help 10,000 households this year, and provide relief from the pandemic.”
Beyond donations, close to 150 SP Heart Workers have invested time to organise the charity drive, assemble and deliver the Power Packs to beneficiaries in various housing estates.
For this first distribution of the year, SP has collaborated with AMKFSC Community Services, TOUCH Community Services, and the constituency offices of Toa Payoh West-Thomson, Kolam Ayer, Tampines West and Taman Jurong.
SP will work with social service agencies and community partners to extend the Power Packs to more families.
Giving is at the heart of SP Group
Amidst the COVID-19 pandemic, SP continues to give back to the community in a sustained manner.
Since 2005, more than S$17 million has been raised for the SP Heartware Fund in aid of programmes for seniors under Community Chest. SP has also provided over 11,750 meals for seniors in Toa Payoh West-Thomson since 2018. Last year, SP donated S$1 million to kickstart the inaugural SP Kids at Heart initiative, which supports KidSTART’s pre-school children from low-income families in their learning journey.
At the heart of SP’s community initiatives are SP’s staff volunteers, known as SP Heart Workers, who continue to dedicate time and effort to drive outreach activities for the vulnerable and underprivileged all year round.
